First thing he's got to do is get his message spread outside of New England. Since his campaign has a relatively high dependence on the Internet, the webcast yesterday was a good way to reach people. But when you mention Vermont to people in California, Florida, or Texas (big electoral-college states), they just snicker and roll their eyes. With all due respect to Vermonters, Dean has to answer the following question, and answer it definitively: What does running Vermont have to do with running the United States of America?
Not that I don't think Dean can answer that question definitively, mind you. I just think it's going to be very hard to steer the Democratic establishment and the undecided voting public toward support of Dean unless he can translate his gubernatorial success into working applications at the national level. To that end, he's going to have to show how he's going to address all the big issues. I'm not just talking about catch-phrases and slogans; I'm talking about going into excruciating detail and explaining to the American people who, what, where, when, why, and how he's going to do what he's going to do as President. For example, on his official website (I forget exactly where), Dean says that he'll tear up the Patriot Act and a couple more dubious pieces of legislation on his first day in office. Is that within his power? What steps will have to be taken? Will he only be able to start the process that day, or will he put it on the back-burner and focus on a lesser issue like Clinton did when he got into office (no offense to homosexuals, but "Don't ask, don't tell" isn't exactly the best issue to start a presidency with)?
Secondly, he needs to get his face on TV more often. And not just on the news shows. Leno, Letterman, MTV, etc. Letterman was making fun of Dean in his Top Ten list last night (which shouldn't really be taken seriously, since Dave picks on everybody). The perfect thing to do now would be for the Dean camp to schedule the Governor on Letterman so that he can answer with a Top Ten list of his own, or even just to shoot the breeze. His face needs to be plastered all over the place, and that includes the home states of his Democratic rivals and President Bush. Dean needs to make himself both visible and available to the American public.
