Totally superficial question, but about how tall is Howard Dean?

Saw him in D.C.. I'd say he is about average height. He should still avoid tanks though.

As a native, I've seen him several times over the last 11 years he had the reigns in my state. I would unfortunately go as far as to call him vertically challenged though I stand behind his campaign to the death. Dean for America!

why height won't be an issue

This is something we cannot change, so I think there's not much point in a major discussion on it. I think his passion for the issues will cancel out any height questions. Also, if a majority of Americans voted for Al Gore who had all the charisma of a toaster oven, then I think Howard Dean has nothing to worry about. If John McCain's campaign had not been destroyed by Bush dirty tricks, I think he would have won the GOP nom. in 2000. I think McCain might be below average height, but the point is, I don't know--because when McCain speaks he is interesting and you don't worry about superficial things like that.

Dean is listed as 5' 9" at the end of this column:
www.burlingtonfreepress.c...042718.htm That sounds about right. But, after a long campaign in which the country gets to know Dean well, how many people are going to think: "Well, I would vote for him, but he's just too short"? Sure, people notice height. But Dean gives the impression of being strong, not puny. If you're worried, just remember: Ross Perot, a short, odd firecracker, was at or near the lead of the 1992 campaign for a while (before he got even more odd). If anything, Dean will make a more appealing candidate than Perot. (He'll be more like John McCain, as advnutr points out.) Height will have little to do with it. |

Re: height | ||

This is a totally frivolous thread, but, oddly enough, an important one. I, too, have seen Dean on a few occasions, and he is about my height, 5'-9" or so. Among groups of politicians, he looks short.
I have been voting for Dean since he first ran for state-wide office, but my first thought on hearing that he was thinking of running for President was: He is too short. In this video age, this will matter. |

Re: height | ||

This reminds me of an old SNL joke commerical from the '88 race.
"George Washington was six foot one. Abraham Lincoln was six foot five. Ronald Reagan is six feet tall. George Bush is six foot two. But Michael Dukakis is five foot five and a half. Vote Bush. He's taller." It is a sad fact but height is a factor. "I'm familiar with the cover. I don't need to read the book. I police the world of action. Inside's where I never look." - Richard Thompson

"No way," I thought, "the chimp can't be six-two, even if he reaches up on just his hind legs. In public appearances, he usually appears to be one of the shortest people in the crowd. Unless he surrounds himself with giants, which, the way that last war was planned, I know not to be the case."
So I put it to Google, and the top entry for ""George W. Bush" height" was: www.doctorzebra.com/prez/t43.htm#6 Says he's 6 foot even. That's more like it. Rove must have gotten to Reuters already. If he's six-two, then I'm a monkeys uncle (insert winky emoticon here). And if W has three inches on Dean, well that's about all he has on him. |

Re: height? | ||

Another thing on height, I was drawn to this board about height because I had heard a stastic once that in Presidential elections that the tallest canidate always wins. Another thing that points to that Bush stealing the election from Gore, who is taller and won the popular vote!!
Anyway, I hope by now people are past that (lets hope). Also Bush is so bad that people will see the best candiate, even if he is shorter. |

For what it's worth, Ford was taller than Carter.

Re: height? | ||

Good, it is shallow to follow that so I am glad about that.
You can also look at the psyche of the voter(not voting age on that one) Didn't the country just go through Watergate and the voter was anti-establishment. Anyway MAYBE the height thing did not apply BECAUSE the voter was ready for a change. AND NOW THE VOTER IS READY FOR A CHANGE__LETS HOPE SO WE CAN GET RID OF BUSH |

Is there a "Height Rule"?
|
Another similarity re: Ford vs Carter was that Ford was appointed, just like the current squatter. Could that account for his rejection, thus overturning the "Height Rule" (ha ha)? There is of course the remote possibility that, although he was a nice enough guy, he was an ineffectual administrator who presided over, and failed to reverse, an intractable economic malaise, called "Stagflation", but really a recession by a different name.
Hmmmmm. Parallels abound. |

Before that goes too far, I think, with the application of some basic logic, we can dispell that little myth. If it were true, our presidents would have to get continually taller and taller, with the only way to have a return to normal-sized people being death in or removal from office.
But just in case, do you think it's time to draft Dennis Rodman? |

Re: Is there a "Height Rule"?

I Think I is unanimous,
BUSH IS SO WEIRD THAT THE HEIGHT RULE does not apply, if it ever did??!! I agree there Bush was appointed by the Supreme Court. He wasn not the PRESIDENT-ELECT he was the President-appointee, appointed by the SUPREME COURT. |

Almost always, the taller presidential candidate wins.
And they wouldn't get taller, as after 8 years, a new election would begin. But there have been 9 presidents to leave office, so they were suceeded by shorter guys? Well... from my memory...
